Cambridge adventure and remembering the fallen

Updated: Nov 24

A very busy weekend. Over 100 miles of cycling as we cycled over to Cambridge & back. Went to Choral Evensong at Kings College Chapel which was absolutely exquisite.

We had planned to catch the local train to Bedford, but it was cancelled last minute. Its not a cycling adventure for us if we don't have some train drama!

Drove over to Bedford then cycled along NCN51 to Sandy, where we did something new - caught a train half way through a ride. A short journey to Huntingdon, which allowed us to continue on mostly, NCN51 to Cambridge.

We went through some very pretty villages, before crossing the Nene river at St. Ives which has a lovely old bridge and market square. We then had around 10/11 miles on the cycle path alongside the guided busway. It felt like 70! It is a great traffic free route but a bit monotonous, but we do go past the nature reserve at Fen Drayton. Once we reached outskirts of Cambridge we visited the mirror wall (over rated) and then into the centre of the cycling mecca of Cambridge.

Cambridge is just lovely, with all its colleges and chapels and the River Cam of course. Fun dodging pedestrians and other cyclists though.

The return journey the next day, saw us on a different route back. A long section on the cycle path alongside A10 before heading out through small villages of Orwell and Barrington before a lovely section which took us right through the Wimpole Estate. Quiet roads back to Sandy and our cars at Bedford.

Sunday was remembrance Sunday so went on a ride out to the Remembrance service  at Newport Pagnell and then I visited the ‘standing with Giants’ exhibition at Stowe Gardens. 1475 statues in memory of the number of British soldiers who lost their lives on the D day landing. Absolutely incredible installation.
