Beautiful England – Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, the Cotswolds and the Chilterns

We have had an amazing summer in the UK this year. It's been wonderful to be able to explore by bike some beautiful regions, we are so lucky with where we live. Incredible places to explore without having to go abroad. These have been my favourite road routes this summer.

Leicestershire

A weekend away with my cycling club saw us taking on 2 amazing road rides. Starting at the iconic Melton Mowbray a fabulous route through stunning golden fields & countryside, quiet roads, relentless climbing (3,500 feet) but some SUPERB descents.

A very yummy lunch at legendary cyclists cafe, Cafe Ventoux - the day could not have been more perfect! Finished off with a lovely social Italian meal.

Next day, was the first time I had been to Rutland Water, and it certainly didn’t disappoint. Upper Hambleton was a particular highlight – a beautiful village on the Hambleton Peninsula, surrounded by the waters of Rutland Water and offering some stunning views.

And then there is the iconic Normanton church, rescued from the flooding of the village (when Rutland Water was built) and the top half remains perched out on a small peninsula looking like it is just floating on the water.

I've cycled in the Cotswolds many times now and it never ceases to disappoint. Beautiful villages like Upper and Lower Slaughter and the very busy Bourton on the Water as well as Stow on the Wold.

The road surface wasn't great if I'm honest but the scenery makes up for it and plenty of challenging climbs to mix it up.

Lincolnshire Wolds

Our annual C+ weekend away was brilliant as always, with a visit to the Lincolnshire Wolds.

An eventful weekend – for me -  2 rides over 2 days, 100 miles, two punctures, two beaches, one horse fly sting, a chest infection and around 14 categorised climbs !

I asked the riders to give me one word to describe the weekend - fun, challenging, good company, marvellous, sunless, social, fantastic!

Saturday was the main ride of the weekend. Don’t listen to anyone who tells you that Lincolnshire is flat because we had 12 climbs on that ride many steep but everyone did brilliantly & some beautiful views and some beautiful fast descents.

Sunday’s ride was a sunless and very windy but very flat ride out to Sutton on Sea, Miami Beach and Mablethorpe beach.

We had some lovely meals out and great pub stops. Overall, a very social and fun weekend on very quiet roads out to the surprisingly varied Lincolnshire Wolds.

Our women’s away day ride this year, saw us heading down to the Chilterns for an absolutely perfect day.

Gorgeous conditions, beautiful countryside & some challenging climbs including Dunsmore & Chinnor Hill & around 7 others!!

Cycled through Chartridge, Chequers (we didn’t see Andy though!) Bledlow Ridge. A wonderful cafe stop at The Walled Cafe, West Wycombe. 🍰🍰

Finished with a well earned and refreshing drink at the crown Inn in Little Missendon.
